VMWare is one of VyOS supported platforms.

One of the deployment options is the OVA template. This OVA supports ESX/ESXi 4.0 and newer.

Download the template from: https://downloads.vyos.io/release/1.1.8/vyos-1.1.8-amd64.ova to the machine with VMWare vSphere Client or Web vSphere client.

In vSphere Client select File, Deploy OVF Template and follow the instructions.

Default login is "vyos", default password is "vyos". No network interfaces or addresses are configured by default.

Installation from the LiveCD

This option should work for both ESX and VMWare Workstation.

A suggested topology

VMWare Adapter Use Case Comments
Network adapter 1 Management interface Put this in a separate port-group specific to your management network
Network adapter 2 External Interface/WAN Put this in a separate port-group specific to a WAN vlan. You may be able to use 802.1Q/VLAN Tagging on a modem or CPE device doing the ethernet handoff. Make sure this is within the same vSwitch that has a physical adapter connected to your modem/gateway
Network adapter 3+ Internal Interface/LAN Create a LAN port group and set the VLAN to 4095. This allows you to create VIFs for each of your internal vlans on the fly without needing to attach additional network adapters from the vSphere console. Do this for each non-WAN/Management vSwitch instance on the Host.

As an added bonus, you can create a vSwitch that has no physical adapters, and still route traffic out to the web through vyos and a second vSwitch. This allows for easy creation and teardown of new lab environments.
